For some reason or another people that are considered survivalists are starting to be seen as on the fringe of society or even crazy. It might have something to do with the consumption economy that has risen in the U. S. over the last few decades. It has become normal to be eyeball deep in debt and to depend on others to provide you with the necessities that sustain your daily existence. A survivalist generally believes in the independence of total self sufficiency and doesn’t believe in being a dependent of the government or others.
Total self sufficiency is a lost art and takes a broad range of skills and a lot of practice to get good at. The benefit of the survival forums is that like minded people can get together and discuss different topics and share ideas to broaden their knowledge base and sharpen their survival skills. Most of our parents went through a time in history when things were very different. The great depression is still a vivid memory for them. The problem is that the age group that understands that things will not always be as good as they are now are dying at a faster and faster rate every day. The knowledge that they gained by enduring the depression is dying with them and the human memory seems to be a short term thing. Most people that I meet these days believes that things can never get as bad as they once were. I hope they are right, but I fear they are wrong. With terrorism on the rise, skyrocketing food prices, massive inflation, peak oil and the stagnation of the American job market, the writing is on the wall. There’s not a lot of time left to get ourselves in a self sufficient state of mind. The survival forums are a good place to start the learning process.
Even if current events reverse themselves and suddenly we enter a period of stability and plenty, the knowledge you gain by being active in the survival forums and independent study will never stop benefiting you. The amount of money that you’ll save by itself would be worth the effort, especially when you realize that it doesn’t take that much to live a happy and more fulfilling lifestyle. The pride and security that you will gain by knowing that you have the ability to survive no matter the circumstances will change your life.
